Samuel Frickleton (1891-1971) was born in Slamannan, Scotland, and enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in February 1915. He became seriously ill on arrival in Egypt, and was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Forced to return to New Zealand, he was discharged as medically unfit on 11 November 1915. After recovering he re-enlisted in April 1916 and sailed to Europe with the 15th Reinforcements, where he was posted to France with the 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade. Frickleton, then a lance corporal, was awarded the Victoria Cross for "conspicuous bravery and determination" during the Battle of Messines on 7 June 1917, in which he destroyed two enemy machine-gun posts (and was severely wounded). As nzhistory.net.nz notes, "with his company suffering heavy casualties, Frickleton decided to take care of the guns himself. Calling his section to follow him, Frickleton advanced through the barrage to one of the machine-gun posts. The smoke and noise of the shelling concealed his approach until the last moment. He lobbed in a grenade, rushed the post and killed those inside. With his comrades providing covering fire, he then rushed a second machine-gun post some 25 metres away, killing its crew and destroying the gun." "By the destruction of these two guns,' the citation read, 'he undoubtedly saved his own and other units from very severe casualties'. Frickleton was promoted to second lieutenant in March 1918, but became ill again and returned to New Zealand "to a welcome from the mayor of Auckland 'attended by thousands of citizens who showed the greatest enthusiasm'. The Auckland Weekly News reported that 'Frickleton, who was given a tremendous reception, was carried shoulder high to his car amid cheers from the crowd.'" After World War I Frickleton was commissioned a lieutenant and served in the New Zealand Staff Corps from 1919 until 1927. This 1920 portrait of Frickleton by Mary Elizabeth Richardson Tripe was made after his First World War service, when he held the rank of lieutenant. It comes from the extensive collection of War Art at Archives New Zealand. This collection is composed of about 1,500 original artworks depicting those who served New Zealand in times of war, and the arenas in which they served.
