English: SS Canastota - Tailshaft Repairs in Auckland, New Zealand in 1920. The following is a quotation from the caption under the original image in 'Free Lance' Vol. XXI, Issue 1053, 25 Aug 1920, p. 17. - "Snapshot showing the tailshaft of the steamer Canastota undergoing repairs in Auckland Harbour. After the Canastota left New York, the bearings in the tail shaft became heated causing the brass liner on the tailshaft to wear badly. Great difficulty was experienced in keeping the stern gland tight, new packing being required every day until arriving at Auckland. Owing to the vessel being loaded with cargo, she was not floated into dock. All her freight was removed from aft and placed forward, which lifted the stern clear of the water. "
