Description Umberto III di Savoia (Avigliana, 1136-Chambéry, 1189). Figlio di Amedeo III e di Matilde di Albon, fu conte di Savoia, Aosta e Moriana dal 1148. Da un punto di vista politico-militare si dovette confrontare con il ripetuto passaggio nei suoi domini dell’imperatore Federico Barbarossa. Ebbe ben quattro consorti: Faidiva di Tolosa, Gertrude di Fiandra, Clementina Zahringen e Beatrice di Maçon. Fu sepolto all’abbazia di Altacomba. La sua figura, nel corso dei secoli, fu oggetto di racconti e leggende e le venne riconosciuto anche, come testimoniato dall’iscrizione presente sulla tela, un alone di santità.
