| Description |
English: So-called Sierschijf van Helden, an ornamental disc (fibula) made of gilded silver, discovered around 1850 by a peat worker in Helden, Limburg, the Netherlands. The object originates from Thracia, was made around 100 BC or later, and came perhaps to Western Europe via trade with the Celts. The disc depicts animals (lions, dogs, a ram's head, and a bull's head) and could be worn on shields or horses' tack. It is now in the collection of the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden. This photo was taken during the temporary exhibition Topstukken van het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in the Limburgs Museum in Venlo, while the museum in Leiden was closed for renovations. |
