Article

Sally Cruikshank

Portion used

Single cel image of an approximately 5,000-cel animated short film

Low resolution?

low, unsuitable for high end reproduction. In particular, this image could not be used to make illegal copies

Purpose of use

Illustration of the artist's work. Animation is a visual medium, and an encyclopedic understanding of an animator's work, particularly one whose art style is routinely described by critics and historians as singular and instantly recognizable, requires illustration of his or her work. This single cel of a 5,000=cel work depicts the animator's two best-known characters, and it is taken from her single best-known work, which in 2009 became the only one of this animator's work to be inducted into the U.S. National Film Registry, which choose only 25 films per years. It is impossible to give an encyclopedic understanding of this animator without an example of her signature work.
