POMPEIANA. 177 shape of a horn, from which they pour liquorinto a patera ^. 2 From a wall, painted. 3 Cymatium of terra cotta, with scenic masks,or persona, perforated to spout the water fromthe roof. 4 Cornice, &c. with lions heads for a similarpiirpose. 5, 6, 7, are also painted upon various walls. PLATE XXXI. PsEUDO garden, or viridarium. The back wall ispainted with pilasters, shrubs, and trellice work;behind the columns, upon a double wall, wereplanted flowers and shrubs. The porticus on theright of the columns was covered over, andranged in front of the tablinum; but the spacebetween this and the painted wall upon a higherlevel was open, except the hither end, where atriclinium, somewhat similar to that of the Streetof the Tombs, will be observed, with the tra- Funde merum genio.—Pers. ii.—3.Floribus et vino genium memorera brevis aevi.
