THK EXILED MARIUS AMIDST THE RUINS OF CARTHAGE. CAIUS MARIUS 271 saw a body of horsemen, sent by the king to seize them,riding down to the shore. Meanwhile, Sulla had left Rome in order to com-mand the army in the war against Mithridates. Whilehe was absent, the two consuls, Octavius and Cinna,quarrelled, and civil war broke out between them.Octavius got the better of the struggle and deposedCinna from his office. But the defeated consul deter-mined to continue the contest, and collected troopsin Italy in order to make war upon his rival. When Marius heard this news, he resolved to takeadvantage of the strife in order to return to Italy. Heknew that Cinna was the enemy of Sulla, and was dis-posed to make changes in the government.
