Description British pirate radio broadcaster Paddy Roy Bates and his wife Joan during legal action, which took his station, Radio Essex, a.k.a. BBMS (Britain's Better Music Station), off the air. 1st December 1966. The following year, Bates moved to an abandoned World War II anti Aircraft platform in the Thames Estuary, but outside British Territorial Waters. He then proclaimed the territory the Principality of Sealand, its sovereigns being himself (Prince Roy), and his wife (Princess Joan).
