“昔 此駅に何某の浪人妻妊娠しける 夫ハ忠義の為に吾妻(あづま)へ赴くに 其帰(かえり)を待居たりし ある夜 佐夜の中山沓掛松原にて盗賊出て恋慕し 絶(たへ)ざるにより斬殺し行衛(ゆくえ)しれす 此女日比(ひごろ)念ずる観世音僧と現じ 亡婦の懐なる赤子に飴をあたへ養育なさしむ 夫此事をしらず 夢見あしきゆへ 急ぎ我家へ帰る道にて夜啼石のはなしを聞て なほなほ奇異の思ひをなし 夜にかヽり沓掛松原の石の辺(ほと)りを通りしに 妻の亡霊あらハれ くハしき事を物語り懐の赤子を渡し 夫(それ)より魂魄(こんはく)付(つき)まとひて 終に敵を討(うた)しけり“
