Summary edit

Media data and Non-free use rationale
Description This is an image of the top half of the front page of The New York Times on October 21, 1973, announcing the dismissal of Archibald Cox as Special Watergate prosecutor.
Author or
copyright owner
The New York Times
Source (WP:NFCC#4) It is found on many blogs on the internet but my source is: http://randompixels.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-saturday-night-massacre-occurred-40.html. It purports to be an accurate picture of the Times front page
Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) Archibald Cox
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) Its use is to show how dramatic the event of the dismissal was and how it was done in the midst of another dramatic confrontation between the US and Russia over the Middle East.
Not replaceable with
free media because
(WP:NFCC#1)
There is no equivalent way to show the drama as succinctly and the use of the image will hardly diminish the NY Times ability to maximize its income on the underlying copyright of the articles.
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) used to illustrate text
Respect for
commercial opportunities
(WP:NFCC#2)
It is a low resolution image of the original (in fact one cannot make out the content of the stories).
Fair useFair use of copyrighted material in the context of Archibald Cox//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:NYTimes_Saturday_Night_Massacre_Front_Page.giftrue

Licensing edit

The image is a very low resolution scan of one half of the front page of the New York Times the day after the Saturday Night Massacre. The scan cannot diminish the NYT's exploitation of its copyright because the text cannot be read (adide from headlines, which are not copyrighted) and the photos are not commercial grade. The use of the scan is to show the dramatic impact of the dismissal (the size and placement of the Time's headlines) as well as the timing of the event during a tense US-Soviet confrontation during a crisis in the Middle East. No other photo or illustration can show these two points. AnthroMimus (talk) 15:48, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
