Summary

Description On the 5th of May 1945 Major Gangl, 10 of his men and SS-Hauptsturmführer Kurt-Siegfried Schrader was the German defenders of Castle Itter. Alongside them was 16 American soldiers with Sherman tank led by John C. "Jack" Lee. And the former prisoners of Castle Itter. Their attackers were the 17th Waffen-SS Panzer Grenadier Division led by Oberführer Georg Bochmann. Who had the order of executing the prisoners of Castle Itter, who were mostly former French goverment officals. The Defence of Castle Itter was succsesful and the attackers were repelled. Amongst the defenders there was only one fatality, that being Major Josef Gangl who was shot while trying to get former French prime minister Paul Reynaud out of harms way. For his defence of Castle Itter, Major Gangl was awarded the American Distinguished Service Cross. The battle for Castle Itter was the only time during World War 2 were Germans and Americans fought side-by-side.
