Summary

Description
English: This engraving by Wilhelm Friedrich Gmelin, first published in 1805, reproduces Claude Lorrain's Landscape with Bacchus at the Palace of the Dead Staphylus which was completed ca. 1672. The scene illustrates the 26th chapter of Dionysiaka or the sacrifice of a bull ordered by Bacchus. It was likely commissioned by a patron. Alternative titles include Temple of Venus.
