English: The most significant of the finds is the Temple of Aphrodite, a circular Doric temple, excavated by Iris C. Love in 1970. At this site Love found the marble base and fragments of the famous statue of Aphrodite sculpted by Praxiteles in the 4th century BC. The statue, one of the most celebrated in classical antiquity, was purchased by the people of Cnidus after the citizens of the Cos had rejected it on account of its nudity (Encyclopaedia Brittanica).
The statue of Aphrodite was set up in an open temple that permitted viewing of the statue from all sides. The circular row of pillars and the architrave connecting them were crown by a domed roof.
