English: Johnson bar for a parking/emergency brake in a White transit bus originally operated by San Francisco Muni. The front of the bus is to the right; the brake is operated by squeezing the grip and pulling back on the lever, then continue to pull back and release the grip; the lever is currently in the rearmost position, corresponding to brake full on. The brake is released by pulling back then squeezing the grip to release the brake, the pushing the lever forward. Under the floor is a pivot for the lever and an arched "rack" with teeth; on the lever is a movable pawl that engages the rack. Squeezing the grip lifts the pawl to let the lever move freely, releasing the grip causes a spring to move the pawl to engage the rack and hold the lever from moving. The lever is just to the left of the driver, the driver's seat is removed in this picture.
