Description
Nederlands: In 1830 brak in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden een opstand uit tegen het gezag van Koning Willem I. Deze zogenaamde Belgische Opstand, schiep een nationale held aan Nederlandse zijde, namelijk J.C.J. van Speijk, ex-burgerwees en luitenant ter zee. Op de vroege morgen van 5 februari 1831 stak hij, voor de rede van Antwerpen de lont in het kruitvat van zijn kanonneerboot, toen Belgische opstandelingen aan boord kwamen en de Nederlandse driekleur dreigden te strijken. De heldendood van Van Speijk had in het noorden een geweldige Van Speijk-cultus tot gevolg.
