English: Holborn: George IV Public House, Portugal Street, WC4 A pub owned by a school!
The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) bought these premises in 2003 and now run them for the benefit of the LSE community, although the pub does remain open to the public. The green tablet displays a bas-relief profile of King George IV, while the black tablet states:
HOARE
& Cos
CELEBRATED
THREE GUINEA
STOUT
Where can you buy a glass of stout for less than £3.15 these days! Hoare's brewery was in Lower East Smithfield and they were taken over by Bass in 1933. Hoare's trademark was a toby jug that subsequently formed part of the Bass Charrington trademark.
