Western sweetvetch is common in subalpine vegetation on open grassy slopes and rocky ridges. The lomented fruits with reticulate venation and loments 6-10 mm wide and purple keel petals (with the characteristic Hedysareae blunt end) that are 15-20 mm long are distinguishing of this species.
