After receiving his doctorate in 1994 in Frankfurt am Main, he has taught as a professor of ethnology with a regional focus on West Africa at Goethe University since 2007. His regional and thematic focuses are West Africa (Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo), material culture, ethnological museums, consumption, migration and mobility, and globalization.

Ses priorités régionales et thématiques sont l'Afrique de l'Ouest (Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo), la culture matérielle, les musées ethnologiques, la consommation, la migration et la mobilité, ainsi que la mondialisation.
