jnracuse,Gaul, and Spain, Julius Cajsar and his followers wouldbe able to point out the best mode then known of sepa-rating the metal from the matrix. At this time, theancient bloomeries were introduced in England, amethod for making Iron which was followed upto the sixteenth century in all parts of the world;the chfTerent shapes a;nd forms being ^vrought bymanual labour, ))rincipally with hammers. Thel)last for the furnace was created by blow-bellows,or a rude piston, fitted into the hollow trunk of atree, the motive i)ower being manual labour. It is very singular that this process was somewhatanalogous in its effect on the iron, and produced insome degree the same results as Mr. Henry Bessemer*luocess, by a continual injection of blast, for, althoughthe pressure must then have been moderate, it left thefluislicd Iron so for exhausted of carbon, as to bemalleable and fashionable into useful forms under thehummer. The next great stride, made by Cort at the end D 3 36 BARROW-IX-FURXESS.

B.\EROW-IX-FURNESS. 37 of the seventeenth century, was the invention of tliepuddhng furnace, which enabled us rapidly to increasethe quantity; but the Iron made during the existenceof Corts sandbottom puddhng furnace, was veryinferior in quahty to that previously produced by theold bloomeries of North Lancashire, Dudley, Sussex, and the Forest of Dean, as no scientific principle wasthen involved in its manufocture. The utter want ofknowledge in this respect left the manufactiure sub-ject to great waste in quantity and deterioration ofthe quahty of Iron produced. Cort, however, lefta valuable legacy to posterity in his invention ofgroove rolls. Mr. Joseph Hall, the practical partnerat the great Bloomfield Works, invented the presentsystem of puddhng, which superseded Corts planaltogether ; and designed hkewise, a different puddlingfurnace adapted to melt and boil the metal in a moltensea of silicon, which protected the Iron from thedevouring effects of the oxygen, then constantly playin
