English: A drawing of Francis Cleyn (or Francesco Cleyn or Clein; also Frantz or Franz Klein) (c. 1582 – 1658), a German-born painter and tapestry designer who lived and worked in England.
Date 17th or 18th century (possibly based on an earlier 1646 portrait).
Medium drawing on paper (graphite underdrawing; gray ink and black wash; square border and various details/corrections in brown pen and ink on ivory medium-weight laid paper mounted to a larger sheet of cream medium-weight laid paper).

  • 17th or 18th century: Created and owned by George Vertue.
  • 1758: Probably purchased as part of a portfolio of drawings from the artist's widow by Horace Walpole.
  • 1842: Listed at the Strawberry Hill Sale (day 8, lot 112); sold at the Strawberry Hill London Sale as part of "Portraits of English painters collected by Mr Vertue and Mr Walpole" (day 10, lot 1270) by one Evans for £61.19.0.
  • December 1949: Sold by James F. Drake to Wilmarth Sheldon Lewis for $1,000 as part of a set of 34 drawings by Vertue, and given by Lewis to the Lewis Walpole Library, Yale University.
Inscriptions under image, lower right, signed in ink: "G. Vertue del."; lower right, written in ink: "from an orig in Poses. Mr Crawly at Hampsted. Hartfordsh. An other orig. drawn in Poses. Mr. Rosse."; lower left, written in ink in Italian: "Il famossmo [famosissimo] pittore Francesco Clein / miracolo dell secolo & molto estimato / dell R. Carlo della grande Britagna. 1646" ("The most famous painter Francis Clein / miracle of the century and greatly esteemed / by King Charles of Great Britain. 1646").
