Notes

This is one of the water-colour drawings made by Georg Forster during James Cook's second voyage to the Pacific in 1772-1775.

The watercolour is listed by Sharpe 1906, p. 185 and by Lysaght 1959 p. 290 as Plate 79. This is the number written on the right-hand side of the watercolour. The NHM lists this watercolour as Plate 77.

This picture was used by John Latham when describing the "New-Zealand duck".(Latham, 1785, p. 543).

The watercolour of a male bird was painted in 1773 and is the holotype for the species.(Medway 1976 pp. 54-55)
