English: In 1909 Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin and his son were the scientists in a four-man team commissioned by John D. Rockefeller to reconnoiter the vast and little-known Manchu Empire of China as a potential site for the humanitarian projects of the nascent Rockefeller Foundation. From left: Ernest DeWitt Burton (American Baptist biblical scholar), Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin (American geologist), Joseph Beech (American Methodist missionary working in Szechwan), Y. T. Wang (interpreter), and Rollin Thomas Chamberlin (son of T. C. Chamberlin, also a geologist), at Tungchwan, Mienchow, Szechwan, 1909. See also "Protestantism in Szechwan".
