Description / Descriptions : Christian Daniel Claus (1717-1787) was a German immigrant who became familiar with the customs and language of the Mohawk Indians during his first years in North America. Under William Johnson he became a lieutenant in the British Indian Department in 1755 and moved to Montreal when he was made the Deputy Agent to the Canadian Indians in 1760. He returned to the Hudson Valley but then fled to Canada in 1777 during the American Revolution. He helped settle loyal Six Nations Indians in Ontario at the Bay of Quinte after the war. He later died in Britain seeking compensation for his earlier losses. /

Christian Daniel Claus (1717-1787) était un immigrant allemand qui se familiarisa avec les coutumes et la langue des Mohawks durant ses premières années en Amérique du Nord. Sous les ordres de William Johnson, il devint lieutenant à l'Indian Department britannique en 1755 et partit pour Montréal en tant qu’agent adjoint chargé des Indiens du Canada en 1760. Il retourna dans la vallée de l'Hudson, puis s'enfuit au Canada en 1777 durant la Révolution américaine. Après la guerre, il aida les Indiens loyalistes de la ligue des Six-Nations à s'établir en Ontario, à la baie de Quinte. Il mourut par la suite en Grande-Bretagne, où il avait demandé d’être indemnisé des pertes subies pendant la Révolution.
