Description
English: The historical coat of arms of Pozsony county
Magyar: Pozsony vármegye címere.
Pozsony vármegye címere csücskös talpú pajzs, melynek mezejében, hármas halmon fél kerék áll, amelyből növekvő, ágaskodó szarvas emelkedik ki. A pajzsot rubinnal, zafírral és igazgyönggyel kirakott, nyitott levélkorona díszíti. A pajzsmezőben megjelenő hármas halmon fél kerékből növekvő szarvas címerképe eredetileg az erdődi Bakócz család címere volt. E család egyik tagja, Bakócz Tamás bíboros unokaöccse, erdődi Bakócz Péter egyik faluját, Monyorókeréket választva a „tekintélyesebb” monyorókeréki Erdődy nevet vette fel, megalapítva ezzel a mondott családot. Az ősi címert (növekvő, ágaskodó szarvas) a továbbiakban is megtartották.
A comitatus valószínűleg a 11–12. században jött létre Pozsony vármegye területén, Pozsony vár székhellyel, prépostságát I. István alapította. Pozsony a 15. századtól szabad királyi város, majd a 16. századtól a Habsburg-házi királyok koronázó városa lett. A városban tartották a magyar rendek országgyűléseiket, és a magyar királyi koronát is a várban őrizték több évszázadon keresztül. A pozsonyi gróf Magyarország egyik zászlósura volt. I. Rudolf 1599-ben gróf Pálffy Miklósnak az örökös pozsonyi várkapitány és Pozsony vármegye örökös főispánja címet adományozta, így a vármegye is a gróf Pálffy család címerét használta vármegyei címerként.
