The territory belonging to this tribe liesbetween the Darwesh Khel Waziris to the north andthe Mahsuds to the south ; it is entered by three passesfrom British territory—the Tochi Pass the best known. 0- Text Appearing After Image: THE DAWARIS 71 the Baran Pass, and the Khaisora Pass.* The inhabi-tants are chiefly cultivators, who wander little beyondthe limits of their own country, and show few of thewarlike qualities which characterize their Waziri neigh-bours to the north and south. The first occasion on which the Indian Governmentcame in contact with the Dawaris was in 1851, when thelatter took part in an attack on one of the border posts,but were driven off with heavy loss. After this littletrouble arose until 1871, when the Dawaris lent theirassistance to the Waziris in acts of hostility towards theIndian Government. As a punishment for their com-plicity in these outrages the Dawaris were ordered topay a fine, but half of the tribe not only refused to complywith this demand, but sent an insulting letter to theBritish authorities, in addition to treating the envoysdespatched to them with great indignity.
