| Notes | "Joseph Boze s'installa à Versailles en 1785 et reçut la même année d'importantes commandes de portraits pour la famille royale et notamment les comtesses d'Artois et de Provence. Marie-Thérèse de Savoie, belle-soeur de Louis XVI, alors âgée de vingt-neuf ans, est peinte dans une tonalité de gris bleu qui accentue son air mélancolique : elle a déjà perdu ses deux filles. Alors que le traitement des étoffes séduit par son aspect précis et illusionniste, la technique du pastel confère un aspect doux à un visage ingrat, fidèlement rendu si l'on se réfère à la description qu'en donne le comte de Mercy-Argenteau : "elle a le teint assez blanc, le visage assez maigre, le nez fort allongé et désagréablement terminé, les yeux mal tournés, la bouche grande, ce qui forme en tout une physionomie irrégulière, sans agrément et des plus communes". La comtesse d'Artois sembla néanmoins satisfaite de son portrait : elle le paya 1200 livres, somme la plus élevée pour un pastel original de Boze, ainsi qu'en témoigne le livre de compte du peintre. Elle en commanda également deux copies peintes à l'huile qu'elle offrit à des dames de son entourage." [2] | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
