Benacre house (without land) is at 6 Benacre Close, off Glen Osmond Rd between Fisher St and Fergusson Ave.

  • 1844 a single-storeyed house was built by G.F. Shipster
  • after the subdivision of section 270 by the main road it passed to Robert Cock.
  • 1846 Purchased on 16 acres by William Bickford who planted the first garden and built a portion of the residence.
  • The next owner was T.B. Strangways,
  • followed by Thomas Graves, who had the grounds replanted as a shrubbery and built 'the present two-storey house.'
  • mid-1870's: Henry Scott, Mayor of Adelaide. During Scott’s tenure of some 30 years, he hosted countless social events.
  • 1906-1923 John Lewis
  • At the death of Hon. John Lewis the property was subdivided into 39 building blocks.
