Summary

Description Battery "A", 1st Regiment Illinois Volunteer Light Artillery, originally known as "Smith's Chicago Light Artillery," was an artillery battery that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Battery A was mustered into service in Chicago (IL) in April 1861 for three-months service. The Battery was subsequently reorganized for three years of Federal service as Battery "A" in July 1861. The battery was mustered out on July 3, 1865. Battles that Battery A fought in included Fort Donelson (TN), Shiloh (TN), Port Gibson (MS), Raymond (MS), Jackson (MS), Champion Hill (MS), Vicksburg (MS), Chattanooga (TN), Kennesaw Mountain (GA), Atlanta (GA), and Nashville (TN). The memorial above was designed by sculptor Leonard Volk, who had designed several of the monuments in Rosehill Cemetery. The monument lists the battles the unit participated in and a roster of those killed. Image by Ron Cogswell on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, using a Nikon D80 and minor Photoshop effects.
