This eminent ^Vmeri-can politician and statesman died, agedsixty-two years. He was born in Port-huul, Me., October i6, iSo6, and gradu-ated at Bowdoin College in 1823, twoyears before the celebrated class whichcontained Longfellow, Hawthorne, JohnS. C. Abbott, and other eminent men.After practising law from 1827 to 1S29at Hridgeton, Me., he opened an office inPortland, and gained speedy success. Itwas not long before he was called toenter political life, by an election to thestate legislature, given him by the whigs.He served a number of terms at differenttimes. l?ut his chief service was in thesenate of the United States, of which hewas a member a great part of the timeafter 1851.
