English: Ancient agricultural watchtowers (Hebrew: Shomera) were common in the Land of Israel in antiquity. Examples can be found all over the historic regions of Judea and Samaria, and the Hebrew Bible makes several references to them. The shomera in the picture is almost completely intact, replete with stairs that allow the owner to guard his vineyards from above. It is located on the slopes of Mount Hareth (Hebrew: Har Heret; Arabic: Kh. Harash) in the Judaean Mountains, just above Nahal Sorek, close to Tsuba. Close is the "Shomera trail" and a brook known as Nahal Tzova, in SWP: "Wadi esh-Shemmarin". Many agricultural remains from antiquity, including terraces, wine presses and other watchtowers, can be found nearby.
