Summary

Description
English: A beautiful species of lichen: Ramalina siliquosa, which is known locally as 'sea ivory'. This species is the shrubby green lichen in the centre of the photo, with fawn-coloured discs (the apothecia). The white crusts behind it are other species. It is a maritime species that grows above the high-water mark, and there were many of them growing on the boulders in this rocky bay. Ramalina siliquosa is a diagnostic species for vegetation of the association Ramalinetum siliquosae. In certain parts of the country (Shetland, North Wales and St Kilda), sheep roaming on the shore will graze on this vegetation type.
See also: Ramalina fastigiata.
