From 1965 the B body Plymouths (same platform as the Dodge Coronet and Charger) were available in base model Belvedere and upmarket Satellite. Plymouth made performance versions of these cars, the Road Runner and the upmarket GTX.
NASCAR's homologation requirement demanded that vehicles to be raced must be available to the general public The first of these big winged cars, the Dodge Daytona had a lot of sucess in 1969 in NASCAR against the Ford Torinos and Mercury Cyclones, so Plymouth built a similar car for 1970; The Superbird, it was based on the Road Runner but with 19inch long shark nose cap, rear facing fender scoops and 3ft high goal post rear wing (to give stability at 150mph) Superbird decals were placed on the outside edges of the spoiler vertical struts featuring a picture of the Road Runner cartoon character.
Engines; 375hp Super Commando 440 4 barrel, 390hp Super Commando 6 barrel or 425hp 426 cu in Hemi.
