Ελληνικά: Ο Αλέξανδρος Παπάγος (1883-1955) υπήρξε μία από τις σημαντικότερες στρατιωτικές και πολιτικές φυσιογνωμίες της ιστορίας της νεότερης Ελλάδας. Έχοντας φοιτήσει σε στρατιωτικές σχολές των Βρυξελλών, κατετάγη στον Ελληνικό Στρατό το 1906. Ανέλαβε ενεργό δράση κατά τους Βαλκανικούς Πολέμους (1912-1913), ενώ, κατά τον Μεσοπόλεμο, διακρίθηκε για τις ηγετικές του ικανότητες και προήχθη στον βαθμό του Αντιστρατήγου. Την περίοδο του Ιωάννη Μεταξά διορίστηκε Αρχηγός Γενικού Επιτελείου Στρατού και οργάνωσε αποτελεσματικά την άμυνα της χώρας ενώπιον του επερχόμενου κινδύνου, ενώ στο ξέσπασμα του Β´ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου διορίστηκε Αρχιστράτηγος, διηύθυνε αποτελεσματικά την απόκρουση της Ιταλίας, οργάνωσε την αντίσταση στα στρατεύματα της Γερμανίας και τάχθηκε με σφοδρότητα κατά της συνθηκολόγησης, την οποίαν πρότειναν πολλοί αξιωματικοί, τονίζοντας ότι τα συμφέροντα της Πατρίδας απαγόρευαν μία τέτοια πράξη. Το 1949, για την πολεμική και αντιστασιακή του δράση, του απονεμήθηκε ο τίτλος του Στρατάρχη, τιμή που δεν είχε αποδοθεί ποτέ σε Έλληνα στρατιωτικό. Από τις Συλλογές του Πολεμικού Μουσείου. |
