Most countries, including both unitary states and those with federal constitutions, are made up of a number of Administrative divisions and subnational entities called federated states or provinces. In many cases, these are creations of the national government, rather than sovereign states or administrative divisions. In other cases, as with the U.S. states, the national government arose from a union of the states, which delegated some of their sovereignty to the national government, while retaining the remaining part of their sovereignty.

As well as the usage of the term in English-speaking countries, a similar term that can be directly translated into English as state or province is found in countries using other languages.
