Cartoon Network is a Canadian English language Category B specialty channel. The channel is based on the U.S. Cartoon Network, which broadcasts animated programming aimed at children daily from 6:00am to 9:00pm EST, while adult-oriented animation and non-animation programming air daily during the Adult Swim programming block from 9:00pm to 6:00am EST.
The channel is wholly owned by Teletoon Canada Inc., a 50/50 partnership between Astral Media and Corus Entertainment, with the Cartoon Network and Adult Swim branding in use through a licensing agreement with Time Warner, the owners of the U.S.-based Cartoon Network. The channel is available in standard definition and high definition, and has two traditional Eastern and Pacific feed schedules.
The network is carried by Cogeco, EastLink, SaskTel MAX, Bell TV, Bell Aliant TV and Telus Optik TV.Shaw Cable, Vidéotron and Rogers have made no announcements of carriage of the network. However, Teletoon and Télétoon will run recent Cartoon Network programming such as Adventure Time, Regular Show, The Amazing World of Gumball and Young Justice, while Télétoon Rétro will run classic Cartoon Network programming such as The Powerpuff Girls, Cow and Chicken and Johnny Bravo.
On March 4, 2013, Corus Entertainment announced that it would acquire Astral Media's 50% ownership interest in Teletoon, Télétoon, Teletoon Retro (English and French) and Cartoon Network. The purchase is in relation to Bell Media's pending takeover of Astral (which had earlier been rejected by the CRTC in October 2012, but was restructured to allow the sale of certain Astral Media properties in order to allow the purchase to clear regulatory hurdles).
