Cagliari metropolitan area (Italian: Area metropolitana di Cagliari) is a term for the urbanized area around the city of Cagliari, Italy. The metropolitan area is composed of the cities of Quartu Sant'Elena, Assemini, Selargius, Monserrato, Quartucciu, Elmas, Capoterra and Sestu.[1] It covers 490,50 km².

The metropolitan area is strictly statistical and does not imply any kind of administrative unity or function.

Economy

Inside the metropolitan area of Caglari (between Cagliari and Capoterra) is located the industrial agglomeration of Macchiareddu-Grogastu one of the most important industrial spot of Sardinia. Also developed is the Tertiary sector. In general the metropolitan area of Cagliari is one of the wealthiest (the per capita income of the Province of Cagliari as a whole was about 20.000 euro in 2008 [2]) areas of the island.

Demography

As for 2009 the estimated population was 370.000 inhabitants (+10.000 compared to 2001), 97.9% of the population was Italian while the largest immigrant group were : Filipino (1.170), Senegalese (950), Romanians (866), Chinese (857), Ukrainians (849), Moroccans (287), Pakistani (258), Germans (256) and others [3]
