Akbar Mirza Khaleeli (born 1936) is a retired Indian diplomat who served as the Indian ambassador to Iran (1980–84), Italy (1986–90) and High Commissioner to Australia (1991–95) with concurrent accreditation to Vanuatu and Solomon Islands. He has been a Permanent Representative of India to the Food and Agricultural Organisation, Rome.[1][2]

Personal life and education edit

Akbar Mirza Khaleeli was born in Bengaluru in 1936. He did his schooling at Bishop Cotton Boy's School, Bangalore and Doveton Corrie Boys’ High School, Chennai. He completed his BA (Honours) Economics degree from Loyola College, Madras and Bachelor of Law from Madras Law College in 1959.[3]

Khaleeli can fluently speak Persian, Urdu, French, and Arabic. He is a student of comparative theology and shows a keen interest in Persian poetry, literature, vocal music and painting.[4] He was considered the best tennis player in South India by Ramesh Krishnan.

Khaleeli married Shakereh Namazie in 1965 and has four daughters, including Rehane Yavar Dhala (b. 1969 in Paris).[5]

Diplomatic career edit

Khaleeli served in the Indian foreign service from 1959 to 1994 in various posts including Director West Asia and North Africa, Joint Secretary Haj, and Chief of Protocol in the Ministry of External Affairs. He has served in Indian Diplomatic Missions as Third Secretary in Baghdad; Second Secretary in Colombo, and First Secretary in Paris; and Charge d"affaires Jordan.[6]

Ambassador Khaleeli has been the Indian envoy to Iran (1980–84), Italy (1986–90) [7] and High Commissioner to Australia (1991–95) with concurrent accreditation to Vanuatu and Solomon Islands. He has been the Representative of India to Food and Agricultural Organisation, Rome.
